Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Since I Was Asked…..

by @ 11:36 pm on July 23, 2007.

1. When I was a volunteer on a political campaign, I stood about eight feet away from former President George H. W. Bush while he made a speech in support of an unfortunately unsuccessful campaign to elect a real Republican as Governor of New Jersey. In the midst of that speech, I got into a pretty vocal shouting match with a few college kids on the other side of the Secret Service line. The best part was the fact that there was a big burly guy in a trench coat between us…….and he knew that the asshole was the kid behind him.

2. My father’s oldest brother is a Catholic priest who gives the English language tours of the Catacombs in Rome and he once met Pope John Paul II

3. On our second date, my soon-to-be wife and I jumped out of a perfectly good airplane.

4. I am a life-long New York Yankees fan. To the point where I can remember where I was when I heard that my personal hero (because I was working pn trying to be a catcher in Little League) Thurman Munson had died in an airplane crash.

5. I was raised, bapitzed, and, confirmed a Catholic, but grew disillusioned with the Catholic Church mostly because it became, in words my Grandmother said when our home parish was remodeled, “too Protestant.” Which is why Pope Benedict XVI’s reintroduction of the Tridentine Mass may actually get me back to Church.

6. Notwithstanding the above, I disagree with pretty much any effort on the part of the state to restrict individual choice based on so-called “moral” standards. I oppose restrictions on homosexual marriage, government censorship of so-called pornography, and pretty much any effort on the part of the state to “protect” the moral sensibilities of it’s citizens.

7. My favorite singers of all time are, in order —- Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong. But, I have developed, largely thanks to my wife, a taste every now and then for a little Toby Keith and Trace Adkins

8. My favorite restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area are, in no particular order:
