Late last night, it looked like the Yankees three game win streak would come to an end, but then Derek Jeter came to the plate:
NEW YORK (AP) — Derek Jeter made up for a rare blown save by Mariano Rivera with one perfectly placed grounder.
Jeter’s infield tapper to the right of reliever Chad Bradford scored Melky Cabrera in the bottom of the ninth inning and gave the New York Yankees a 7-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.
As Peter Abraham points out, a blown save by Rivera is a cause for concern, but it looks like he’ll be given a rest:
It’s amazing that the Yankees are 24-8 since the All-Star break and 29-10 since July 2.
But tonight was a warning sign that they Joe Torre has to be careful with Mariano Rivera.
Not only did Rivera allow three hits and a run in the ninth, but he twice failed to back up bases when he allowed a hit. Torre said after the game that Rivera would get Tuesday off. You have to wonder if, like last season, it’s catching up to him
His line the last two games: 2.1 6 2 2 0 2.
Hopefully, the rest of the bullpen can pick up the slack.
