The Reagan Quote Is A Fake

by @ 10:07 pm on August 20, 2007.

In dealing with the Soviet Union, Ronald Reagan had a favorite phrase “trust, but verify.”

Obviously, I should have done that before posting this provocative post about President Reagan’s supposed opinion of a then much younger George W. Bush.

Perhaps, I should have even consulted my own copy of The Reagan Diaries, purchased from Amazon only a few short months ago.

Folks, the truth is, there ain’t no such entry. In fact, the only things noted for 5/17/86 are the fact that President Reagan had lunch with members of the Presidential Honor Guard, did his regular Saturday radio broadcast, and welcomed his dog Rex home from the vet.

In retrospect, the idea that President Reagan would call Michael Kinsley to get a job for the son of his Vice-President is, well, just absurd.

Man was I wrong.

Sorry.

It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong. You and I don’t always see eye-to-eye, but my respect has jumped for you ten-fold.

Out of curiosity, where’d you find out? Someone e-mail you or Snopes or another source?

I did what I should have done before posting the original article.
