If nothing else, today’s home opener against Youngstown State should finally put last season, and how it ended, to rest for the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Starting to feel a little better?
Chances are, it will be even better tomorrow.
That BCS national championship game in January left a whopper of a hangover, bigger than the one created by some Michigan losses, maybe bigger than any in Ohio State football history.
Spring practice probably helped a little. Stories about the team reporting for summer workouts probably did, too. But that stuff was like some of those goofy hangover cures that work a little, but not a lot. A couple of greasy eggs and bacon - the medicinal equivalent of the spring game - may make that throbbing head feel a little better, but all that nausea isn’t likely to clear up completely until the Buckeyes play again.
If today’s season opener against Division I-AA Youngstown State may not be exactly what the doctor ordered, it is relatively risk-free. If OSU were playing a Texas or USC, there’s a chance a lot of Buckeye fans would wind right back on the couch tomorrow, holding their heads and wondering if there’s a chance to get Indians playoff tickets.
Instead, a nice, smooth victory over the Penguins should make the pain stop and, if nothing else, offer a false sense of security.
Yes, there’s always a chance something could go bad today, but it’s incredibily unlikely.
And who names their football team the Penguins anyway ?
