Forty-three years ago today, October 27, 1964, Ronald Reagan delivered one of the defining speeches of his political career in support of the already-doomed Presidential candidacy of Barry Goldwater. It was a rallying cry for conservatives, not the conservatives we know of today, or the neocons who have taken over the White House, but Barry Goldwater conservatives who actually believed in individual liberty.
If you want to know the difference, compare anything Pat Buchanan, Gary Bauer, or the theocons have ever written to Goldwater’s classic The Conscience Of A Conservative. The differences are so palpable that you wonder if Goldwater would be welcome in his own party were he around today.
