In what will be a surprise to most people, it looks like the next Yankee Manger will be Joe Girardi:
The Yankees appear to be focusing on Joe Girardi to replace legendary Joe Torre as manager. Barring an unforeseen development, Girardi could receive the offer Monday.
Indications are strong that Girardi is the first choice of general manager Brian Cashman, who has been weighing a difficult call for days. Negotiations are expected to go quickly, with the Yankees expected to give Girardi a three-year contract for about $6 million to take one of the most high-profile jobs in sports. An announcement could come as early as Tuesday.
Cashman isn’t expected to make his final decision until Monday, but the sense is that he is now trained on Girardi, the former Yankees catcher and 2006 Manager of the Year with Florida who had to beat out Yankees icon and George Steinbrenner favorite Don Mattingly, plus Yankees coach Tony Pena.
Apparently Girardi was pretty impressive when he met with the Steinbrenner triumvirate last week, in a way that favorite Don Mattingly was not.
But I’m not sure what makes Giradi a better manager than Mattingly.
Yes, he has experience as a Major League Manager, but it’s one season of experience at the head of the Florida Marlins.
And they finished 4th in the NL East that year.
Something tells me this isn’t going to be pretty.
