Reports that Cong. Tom Davis has given his wife $ 400,000 from his Congressional re-election campaign are fueling speculation that he may not run for re-election in 2008:
Washington DC (Map, News) – Rep. Tom Davis poured nearly $400,000 into his wife’s bid for a second state Senate term from his congressional re-election campaign last month, according to finance reports released Tuesday.
The expenditures are legal under Virginia law, which places no limits on the size of donations as long as the contributions are disclosed. The money, which mainly funded television commercials, does raise questions about the congressman’s future.
“He already said he is not running for the U.S. Senate next year, and there’s been a lot of speculation he is going to retire from the House,” said Sean O’Brien, director of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership. “This is going to get the rumor mill going even more that he isn’t going to run again and will not need that money. On the other hand, he is supporting his wife, who is a moderate Republican like him.”
And it wouldn’t be hard for someone as well connected as Davis to raise $ 400,000 or more if he does in fact run for re-election in 2008. Nonetheless, stuff like this makes you wonder.
