Connecticut 38 Rutgers 19

Unlike last year, things are not going the Scarlet Knights’ way this year, and it’s showing:

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Rutgers’ entire season was pretty much symbolized by last night’s performance against Connecticut.

There’s nothing special about it at all.

Start with a blocked punt. Throw in a 97-yard kickoff returned allowed. Then cap it off with a missed field goal at a key juncture.

Special teams? Neither the Scarlet Knights nor their kicking games are.

“Right now, it’s hard to tell where we are,” running back Ray Rice said. “We just need to get home and get ready for the final three games.”

Once a top-10 team, Rutgers tumbled to borderline bowl hopeful after Connecticut took advantage of another mistake-riddled performance by the Knights for a 38-19 victory last night at Rentschler Field.

The 16th-ranked Huskies, the Big East’s biggest surprise, improved to 8-1 overall and remained the only unbeaten team — at 4-0 — in league play.

Rutgers? The Knights are 5-4 (2-3 in the Big East) with three to play and have the look of a team that wants no part of practicing in December.

“This is a good team,” said quarterback Mike Teel, “but it’s a good team making stupid decisions, making stupid penalties and doing stupid things at critical times.”

At this point, Rutgers will be lucky to get a bowl bid at all.
