Musharraf’s Emergency Rule Is Helping al Qaeda

by @ 7:27 am on November 8, 2007.

Rather than helping in the fight against extremists, General Musaharraf’s assumption of dictatorial rule appears to be more of a benefit to the Islamists than anyone else:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — President Pervez Musharraf’s declaration of emergency rule has so alienated Pakistan’s moderate middle class that many analysts fear he has created a power vacuum that will allow militant Islamists to flourish.

Pakistani police continued arresting opponents yesterday, adding to thousands of lawyers, human rights activists and campaigners for “civil society” who have been jailed since Gen. Musharraf suspended the constitution on Saturday.

Something tells me this isn’t going to end well at all.

Do you feel the same way about the Patriot Act, warrantless wiretaps, denial of habeas corpus, rendition, torture, etc etc etc
