Missouri, West Virginia, Ohio State At Top Of AP & USA Today Polls

by @ 2:56 pm on November 25, 2007.

Missouri, West Virginia, and Ohio State make up the top three spots in both the Associated Press poll and the USA Today Coaches Poll.

In the AP Poll, Missouri is on top:

NEW YORK (AP) — Missouri is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 for the second time in school history. The Tigers have to be hoping this stay is longer than the first.

Missouri became the fourth team this season — joining Southern California, LSU and Ohio State — to hold the top ranking, a day after beating Kansas 36-28 to earn a spot in the Big 12 championship game. Not since 1997 have so many teams been No. 1 in a season.

The Tigers’ only other time at No. 1 lasted a week in 1960.

West Virginia moved up to No. 2 on Sunday, its highest ranking ever, and became the eighth team this season to be ranked second. The Mountaineers’ 66-21 victory over Connecticut earned them the Big East title and knocked the Huskies out of the rankings.

No. 3 Ohio State, Georgia and LSU complete the top five.

In the USA Today Poll, it’s West Virginia that’s ranked at No. 1, with Missouri in 2nd, and the Buckeyes in 3rd.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the BCS Rankings. Last week, West Virginia, Missouri and Ohio State were ranked 3, 4 and 5. Since both No. 2 teams — LSU and Kansas — lost this weekend, all three teams will move up, but its unclear what the order will be once the computers are done. West Virginia’s win over Connecticut is likely to be seen as less impressive than Missouri’s win over No. 2 Kansas; so it’s entirely possible for the Buckeyes to sneak into second place this week.
