Fascism, that is:
The vapid talking heads on Fox & Friends obviously had no idea how to respond to what Paul said. They were expected something simple, I’ve got to assume, and to have a politician quote Sinclair Lewis, and actually make a valid point about the mis-use of religion in politics, was much more than they were prepared for.
Then, again, it’s Fox.

This is a man who claims to be a Christian? Ron Paul has lost me entirely. While I would not try to claim that fascism is exclusive to non-Christians, to imply that Huckabee is a fascist with little to back it up (and mind you, I do not plan on voting for Huckabee in the primary) is outrageous. I’d say he should apologize to Huckabee, but I’ve never believed that it makes any sense for someone to apologize for something they are not sorry for. I do think, however, that the vapid Ron Paul followers should reconsider what they are getting with Paul.

CR UVa -
you clearly missed the point. Paul is commenting on the general misuse of religion in politics, not saying that Huckabee is a fascist.

bbartlog,
Then why did Paul make the fascist comments then? It was simply stupid to make those remarks.
Mike Huckabee is many things, but I don’t compare him to Mussolini or Hitler who are genuine fascists.

Kevin,
While this comment is unlikely to make RP any friends in the Republican Party as it currently exists, I don’t see what the big deal is.
Paul isn’t saying anything different about this that what people like David Brooks and Charles Krauthammer have said about Huckabee’s religion-heavy rhetoric.

It is rather obvious Ron was making a generic statement that Christianity should not be used to leverage votes as some kind of rally around the Cross. Look if Jesus himself turned down efforts of some jews to make him KING. He was no politician, he was a saviour of mens souls, not their current affairs.
So please, do not bash Ron for trying to disconnect religion from politics. Do you not realize that the democrats would just love for Huckabee to win the nomination?? They will crucify his christian position as the election gets closer. A man can be a christian, his actions reflect that, with few words spoken. Ron Paul is a christian, but he will not use christianity as some good luck charm to place him temporarily ahead of any candidate at the sake of using the name of Jesus Christ alongside the republican party.
