Tancredo Drops Out, Throws His 1% To Romney

by @ 4:20 pm on December 20, 2007.

As expected, Tom Tancredo dropped out of the Presidential race today and threw his support to Mitt Romney:

DES MOINES — After claiming credit for pushing the issue of illegal immigration to the forefront, Tom Tancredo dropped out of the race and threw his support to Mitt Romney here today.

While noting that he doesn’t completely share Romney’s views, Tancredo said, “the reality is this: He is the best hope for our cause.”

He also made plain that he was moved to get out of the contest because he feared the rise of Mike Huckabee, who has taken a less hard-line approach to immigration in the past.

“It was important in making this decision — you bet your life it was,” Tancredo said, speaking to a group of reporters and supporters at a press conference.

He said he met with Romney this morning, but had not decided to support him going in.

Tancredo said he had been “in communications” with some other campaigns, but wouldn’t disclose who else sought his support.
