Former Senator and Governor George Allen has decided not to run for the Governor’s Office again in 2009:
Former Virginia Gov. George Allen will not be a candidate for the same office next year, he announced Tuesday in a statement to The Associated Press.
Allen, who was governor from 1994 to 1998 and U.S. Senator from 2001 until last year, made his plans public to end speculation about the 2009 governor’s race for which two candidates have already announced their intentions.
According to the Virginia state constitution, governors cannot serve a second consecutive term in office. But they can run for a second non-consecutive term.
Frankly, this is probably the best thing for the Virginia GOP. They need to bring in new blood.
