The five Republicans who have a chance at being the nominee, and Ron Paul, gathered for a debate in South Carolina last night:
Fred D. Thompson tried to salvage his faltering presidential campaign at a debate Thursday night with a barrage of sharp attacks on the “liberal” policies of Mike Huckabee, the fellow Southerner whom he clearly sees as a rival in the South Carolina primary.
The performance by Mr. Thompson, which including several pointed one-liners, capped a debate that showed the altered terrain of the Republican field as it moved beyond contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Mitt Romney took on Senator John McCain, the victor in New Hampshire, over economic issues in an effort to sway voters in Michigan before its primary on Tuesday. Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Thompson tussled over South Carolina voters. And Rudolph W. Giuliani took a muted swipe at Mr. McCain in an effort to win over security-minded voters before the Jan. 29 Florida primary.
But it was Mr. Thompson’s performance, in which he shook off the laid-back style that has defined his candidacy, that provided some of the liveliest moments of the debate in Myrtle Beach, S.C..
Whether this will be enough to resuscitate Thompson’s comatose campaign remains to be seen.

Fred Thompson is our Guy, He is the one who will Secure the borders, and help our economy world wide. He will stop all our tax dollars which is In the Billions . That we pay for housing , welfare, food stamps/ medical care for these illegals. Texas in one month last year spent over 36 million just for health care for illegals. I have had enough, Only He or Duncan Hunter can and will fix this and Have a proven record . Mccain has proven he is Pro amnesty, Anti Military, since he votes No on most bill in support of soldiers and veterans. McCain voted to give social security to Ilegals , in system which is almost broke as it is, I refuse to allow him to take funds from American Seniors who Really need it and whom have Earned it. See his Record on http://www.numbersusa.com and http://www.congress.org. Where you can view all candidates records. I am not going to be a gullable voter and believe what these candidates say , because they will say anything to get elected, but I will check there records, what they have stood for in the past is what they will continue to screw up in the future. and Obama, read his book , he admits he was registered in his schools as a Muslim and went to classes on the Koran

Chris — take a look at Thompson’s web site for substantive positions on all the issues. Senator Thompson has been broadly acclaimed as having the most well throughout proposals of the campaign. (Even the Washington Post sang his praises on this.) Seems to me most the other guys are talking bumper stickers and being cute/funny. The ability to talk bumper stickers and to be cute/funny are not major qualifications for the Presidency.
