Mitt Romney: This Week’s Comeback Kid ?

by @ 7:35 am on January 13, 2008.

It looks like Mitt Romney may be on the verge or reasserting himself as one of the GOP frontrunners by pulling off a win in Tuesday’s Michigan Primary.

First a new MSNBC poll shows Romney with an 8 point lead over John McCain:

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who badly needs to win Tuesday’s Michgian primary, has an 8-point lead over Sen. John McCain of Arizona in a McClatchy/MSNBC poll of Michigan voters to be released Sunday.

Romney had a narrower lead in a Detroit Free Press poll and was tied in a Detroit News poll.

The McClatchy/MSNBC poll puts Romney at 30 percent, McCain at 22 percent, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 17 percent, former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee at 7 percent, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani at 6 percent and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas at 5 percent.

And, as noted, he’s also leading in a new poll released by the Detriot Free Press:

Republican primary voters whose greatest concern is the economy could give Bloomfield Hills native Mitt Romney his first major state victory in Tuesday’s Michigan presidential primary, according to the Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll.

Romney leads John McCain, 27%-22%, with Mike Huckabee in third at 16%, the poll showed. Romney’s core of support is in metro Detroit, where he has a 2-1 advantage.

If Romney does pull off a win in Michigan, it will make an already confusing Republican race even harder to predict.

Update: There’s definitely something going on, a just-released Rasmussen poll has Romney taking the lead as well:

The seven day campaign leading up to Michigan’s Republican Presidential Primary began with a toss-up between Mitt Romney and John McCain.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found Romney with 26% of the vote, McCain with 25%, and Mike Huckabee with 17%. The survey was conducted on Wednesday night, immediately following the New Hampshire Primary.

The current election poll finds that Giuliani has slipped from 19% support in early December to 6% today. In addition to the frontrunners, he now trails Fred Thompson who is the top choice for 9% of voters and Ron Paul who attracts 8%.

This should be interesting.
