Northern Virginia is getting it’s first major snow storm of the season:
A winter storm moving into the region prompted school closings in several rural Virginia counties this morning, and some private schools in northern Virginia also canceled classes in anticipation of the bad weather.
Snow began falling in downtown Washington shortly after 10 a.m. Forecasters predicted a combination of snow, sleet and rain in the afternoon and freezing rain by evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Temperatures are expected to drop several degrees later today, and roads could become icy as the precipitation freezes. Highs were expected to be in the mid-30s, and lows around freezing.
