Virginia House Committee Votes Against Gas Tax Increase

by @ 12:27 pm on February 4, 2008.

The House Finance Committee has voted against increasing Virginia’s gas tax:

RICHMOND, Feb. 4 — A House of Delegates committee rejected Monday a proposal to raise Virginia’s gas tax by 5.5 cents a gallon, to 23 cents, highlighting anew the political difficulties of the search for more money to help ease the state’s transportation troubles.

The state gas tax, now 17.5 cents a gallon, hasn’t been raised since 1986. Some Senate Democrats are advocating an increase this year to help fund highway maintenance. But the House Republican majority is resisting the idea, noting that gas prices have been on the rise in recent months.

After a brief debate, the House Finance Committee voted 16 to 2 against an increase.
