Not only will the 2008 election be the first time since 1960, and only the third time in American history, that a sitting Senator has been a major party candidate for has been elected President, it will also be the first time in American history that two sitting Senators ran against each other for President.
The other time a Senator ran for was elected President ? 1920, when Senator Harding ran against Governor Cox.

George McGovern was a sitting Senator in 1972 and Barry Goldwater in 1964.

You are correct, of course.
I meant to say that it would be only the third time that a sitting Senator was elected President. I’ve made the appropriate change to the post.
Thanks for catching it.
