The protests against Kosovo’s declaration of independence reached Belgrade today when rioters attacked the U.S. Embassy:
(CNN) — Violence broke out Thursday as tens of thousands of Serbs protested Kosovo independence and reportedly set fire to the facade of the U.S. embassy in Belgrade, according to news agencies.
Riot police fired tear gas at Serb rioters as protesters wearing masks broke into the embassy.
U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said; “We are in contact with the Serbian government to ensure that they devote the appropriate assets to fulfill their international obligations to help protect diplomatic facilities in this case.”
The embassy was closed and not staffed, a U.S. official told CNN. The United States was among the first countries to offer official recognition of independent Kosovo.
The violence was part of a much bigger, peaceful demonstration where up to 150,000 people chanted ‘Kosovo is Serbia,” and vowed to never accept the province’s independence.
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, who earlier addressed the rally, said “Kosovo is Serbia’s first name.” He called the declaration of independence last Sunday illegal and said will do all he can to get it annulled.
Anything ? The last time a Serbian said that in connection with a former province of Yugoslavia, we ended up with a civil war that killed tens of thousands. Kostunica may be as bombastic as Milosevic was, but I don’t know that he has either the will or the means to translate his words into actions.

I must agree with Gergely. I am a Serb, very saddened by what the hooligans did today. It is unfortunate, but a reality, that these kinds of acts get associated with the whole nation. I hope that the rest of the world will be able to see that the drunken gangs always use the opportunity to express their anger in a misdirected manner, and that their behavior is not a result of any patriotic or political persuasion, but merely an act of violence during highly vulnerable times for Serbia. If they were true patriots, they would do what is best for Serbia and be peaceful, polite, and friendly…

I agree with Vioslav that let all sepertion movements take place, pull serbs regiosn in Kosovo, Bosnia nd Croatia back into Serbia and leave all the ALbanians to kill each other. I have visited Serbia and Croatia 4 times over the past 3 years and see a Serbia rushing to modernize and become a prt of EU.NOw along comes UN and NATO and they grab Kosovo from them. Albanians are not in war for territories. They have never been. The Albanian people have never been mentioned in history as invaders. If so, could you please be so kind and provide us with the name of one Albanian leader that lead his troops to foreign territories? Among thousands of wars that have happened in that peninsula of ours, can you name one that was started by the Albanians for territory?
And don’t you worry. The Albanians are looking into the future already. In fact they have been trying to do so for centuries. But it hasn’t been that easy to aim for the fancy when forced to struggle for basic existence. The future is the reason the Albanians are ecstatic about the independence and thankful to every country that acknowledges it. Now they can take off and fly proud and free. Mother Theresa was Albanian, born in Macedonia – so what? No Serb has ever claimed her as Serbian…Serbs have enough world class athletes, scientists, novelists – they don’t need a nun.
The Serbians have been demonised in this conflict, but when you look at the statistics (ratio of Serbs and Albanians at different points in the 20th century and today), of course it’s a different story. Not to mention the obvious fact that 200 000 Serbs have not been able to return to their homes just from the last big conflict alone, and the population of ethnic Albanians is larger then ever. Go figure, with all this alleged ethnic cleansing, the picture is seems odd…
The problem for Serbia is that it never had a good politician. A good politician is a whore. It’s as simple as that. But Serbian politicians (with the notion of pride which doesn’t get you far the way it may have, a few hundred years ago) tend to stick their noses up every time, irritating the big powers, and so their people suffer.
But Kosovo is historically Serbian. Actually no one even denies that! (well there’s a new ethnic Albanian rhethoric which is trying to promote the notion of being descendants of the Illyrian people who lived there before 6 cen.- but the truth seems that Illyrian peoples lived all accross the Balkans and were assimilated with Slavs, except for the Albania proper, which has little to do with Kosovo.)
Well, I’m sure no side is innocent, it’s always like that, but one thing that we always fail to realise, is that there is something like a collective unconscious for groups of people, which is a result of the suffering of the ancestors that makes a mark on their psyche. After watching a part of the programming of the Serb rally today (the peaceful part in front of the big Orthodox cathedral), it was so obvious that this is not just a matter of nationalism (which Serbia has a problem with and needs to learn to deal with), but in ESSENCE, it is a matter of a deep spiritual connection to their past, part of their unconscious which will haunt them for ages until they feel justice is served. The historic battle in which they lost so many to the Ottoman invaders in 1389 is history, but with centuries it also becomes like a myth that acts on their psyche and creates a group ’soul’ so to say. The more a group suffers, the stronger their unconscious connection becomes. Jewish people are probably the greatest example. Serbs with their endless troubles are up there too.
And so the problem is far from over. It is going to resurface again and again, possibly igniting a bigger world conflict that may already be cooking anyway etc.
Do we never learn from history?
If the Kosovars (Albanians aka Shiptars) do not want to live within the country of Serbia, the exit doors are wide open and they can peacefuly go to Albania. They already have their Albanian country in Europe and there is no place for another one. Macedonia, Greece and Montenegro have the same problem with these people. They live for the day like this, when they will take parts of our countries with the blessings of the corrupted US and EU politicians. Well, I just can imagine what’s going to happen when they pour more money into their pockets… money that comes from DRUGS, PROSTITUTION, WEAPON SMUGGLING… So be it.

For those of you “familiar” with the situation from CNN broadcasts, please take the time and read Ivo Andric’s book “Bridge over Drina” (I don’t know the real English title, but it should be close). There are many ethnic Serbs, Croats and Bosnians living here in my hometown Pécs and several of them recommended this novel to me. I enjoyed it tremendously and it taught me a lot about the Balkans.
Please stop hating each other and start thinking!

In 1968 when Czechoslovakia wants to be free, Poland was forced by USSR to attack Czechoslovakia and suppress Czech’s freedom movements, and this is our shame now an then. To this day people in Poland are ashamed of this. Now my government blindly support USA (but people in Poland not support this) about Kosovo and this is also a shame, because it’s violation of international law and it’s violation of independent nation -Serbia.

US violate Serbian independence. What would you do if other countries violate your country? There was no war in Slovenia. Slovenians had disarmed and killed remaining Serbs in their, in that time together army. So if you think that shooting and killing unarmed soldiers is war, then there is something wrong with you.
In Croatia Croatians attacked Serbs in their Serbian Kraina (part of Croatia where over a million Serbs were living). Serbs tried to defend them selfs but when Americans started to deliver arms and military tactics to Croatians under cover of humanity aid, Serbs lost their chances (that operation of Croatian army is known as ‘Storm’ and it was identical with U.S. forces operation ‘Desert storm’ in golf, so now think about it)…
As someone already said, war in Bosnia officially started with killing of one Serbian wedding guest by muslims, so I’m also wondering who started that war!?

Even more so you could have read about the “barbaric invasion between the 5th and 8th centuries” and the creation of the first Serbian state in the 7th century AD. What? Kosovo is independent? Haha I am not so sure…. 2.5 billions people are against independent Kosovo. And I think that new country must be accepted by UN. Show me ONE Albanian historical monument on Kosovo and Metohija! Despite vandalism of Kosovo’s Albanians, and destroying over 80 Serbian churches and monasteries just in the last few years (not to mention before) – a several hundreds of Serbian monuments still remain on Kosovo and Metohija.

Kosova from Feb 17 is independent and guess what the important countries have recognized it. To tell you the truth we dont need Russia or China. Who needs countries that are isolated from the world? not us.

America, UK, Germany, France, Italy Denmark, Poland etc have recognized Kosova – Now who gives a fuck if your 3rd world countries won’t recognize us – China should start taking a look at their own country – 90% of the wealt in 5% of the population, while the rest struggle to get food on the table.
