Texas Is Slipping Away For Hillary

by @ 4:24 pm on February 25, 2008.

The latest Rasmussen poll shows that the trend in Texas in pointing clearly in the direction of an Obama victory:

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Texas finds Senator Hillary Clinton clinging to a one-point lead over Senator Barack Obama. With just over a week to go, it’s Clinton 46% Obama 45%. Nine percent (9%) of voters remain undecided and another 14% say it’s possible they could still change their mind.

Last week, Clinton led Obama by three percentage points. The week before, she had a sixteen-point advantage.

(…)

Clinton now has a five point advantage among women but trails by seven among men. Both those figures are down from the previous survey. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of the sample for this poll are women. That’s up from 52% in the earlier survey, largely because more women expressed a higher likelihood of voting.

Clinton leads among voters 50 and older (51% of the sample). She does especially well among those who are over 65 while Obama carries the day with voters under 50.

Twenty-nine percent (29%) say they have already voted and Obama leads handily among this group.

Even money says Obama is leading within three days.

Update: It didn’t even take three days. A new CNN Poll shows Obama with a slight, though stastically insignificant at the moment, lead:

(CNN) — Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are in a statistical dead heat in Texas, according to a poll released eight days before the state’s crucial presidential primary.

In the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Monday, 50 percent of likely Democratic primary voters said Obama is their choice for the party’s nominee, while 46 percent backed Clinton.

But taking into account the poll’s sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for Democratic respondents, the race is a virtual tie.

Clinton had a statistically insignificant 50 percent to 48 percent edge over Obama in last Monday’s CNN/ORC poll in Texas.

“The 2-point gain for Obama and the 4-point drop for Clinton are both within the poll’s sampling error, so although the survey appears to indicate some movement toward Obama, we cannot say for certain that he has gained any ground since last week,” said CNN polling director Keating Holland.

Two recent polls by other organizations also show the race statistically even.

What is important, though, is that the trend toward Obama continues and shows no sign of stopping.

The reason the telephones polls are ahead for Obama is because Obama supporters are couch potatoes. Clinton supporters are out doing things to make this a better country to live in.

  2. Ryan Francis Says:

    Hah. Good one.

  3. Bob Matsuoka Says:

What an inane comment. You aren’t representing your candidate well. Or perhaps you are? That sort of “head in sand” attitude smacks of Hillarytown…

  4. Jim Says:

    @Brenda Oberholtzer

nice divisive attitude. That’s the attitude this country does not need. Can’t you see the more you name call, slam and bash Obama the stronger he gets? Americans are sick of name calling politics. It’s time to grow up and act like adults. It’s time for a change. I don’t want my daughter growing up in your mean spirited America.

“The reason the telephones polls are ahead for Obama is because Obama supporters are couch potatoes. Clinton supporters are out doing things to make this a better country to live in.” – This is silly. I was at the Hawaii caucus that Obama took 76 to 23. There was a record turnout, four times higher than any time previous. And most of the new people went for Obama, as shown by his 3 to 1 sweep.

  6. Will Says:

    @ Ryan, Bob, and Jim

I think that your sarcasm detectors are all broken.

  7. Affable Bob Says:

Well, I was on the fence, but after that “couch potato” comment I’m with Obama. I’m no couch tater.

  8. Amy Says:

Perhaps the polls changed due to Hillary’s little outbursts this past weekend. She showed that she, too, has the Bush mentality of it’s her way or the highway – and that has worked out so well for us over the last 7 years.

All I can say is if she talks down to and belittles her husband and daughter like she does the voters and Obama, I’m beginning to understand why Bill did what he did with Monica and the others.

For all the women who think that Hillary should be elected to represent us, what kind of women are you? Do you really want someone who is hot-tempered, mean-spirited and a downright witch to represent the true American woman? I certainly don’t.

As for experience – she claims to have 35 years experience – even more than McCain? What? She started at 12? And for someone with so many years of ‘experience’ what has she really done? Do we have national healthcare? No. She couldn’t get it done before and she blames it on party divides – well, how does she plan on getting it through if she’s president when she is part of the party divides?

  9. Alan Says:

i’m sorry, but obama will be a horrible leader. yes, i am supporting hillary, but you’ve gotta face the facts. hillary’s operated in the federal government for several years. she knowns what she’s doing. obama is just turning heads because of his charming message of change, which will just turn out to be hollow and meaningless. he does not have as many allies in congress that will support his agenda as hillary does. it’s time america forget the prejudice, shovinist view and start seeing hillary as a representative for the people. not as a woman, not as bill clinton’s husband, not as a former first lady. just as a person with the best capability to lead this country among the candidates this year.

america, stop liking what you know you really don’t. i mean, first you elect bush, don’t like him, STILL RE-ELECT HIM, then smash him with a 39% approval rating? STOP LOOKING FOR WHAT YOU KNOW IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU! START LOOKING FOR BETTER SOLUTIONS!

    HILLARY ‘08

  10. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Alan,

The only “operating in the Federal Government” that Hillary did prior to becoming Senator is the fact that she slept with the President.

Other than that, she’s got as much qualification to be President as Obama does.

  11. Matthew Says:

“start seeing hillary as a representative for the people. not as a woman, not as bill clinton’s husband”

Yeah, I figured she wore the pants in the relationship. Prolly has a bigger meatstick too…

  12. Matthew Says:

The only “operating in the Federal Government” that Hillary did prior to becoming Senator is the fact that she slept with the President.

Failed there too obviously, or we wouldn’t know Monica’s name.

  13. g. Anton Says:

It’s very difficult to predict what will happen in the Texas and Ohio Democatic primaries. Perhaps the best thing to do is to just sit back and wait to see what happens–there doesn’t seem to be any experts here, as most of the past prognasticators’ and polsters performance has been terrible.

I admit that I have a predilection for Obama, but has suprised me is the “bitchiness” of good old Hillary. The “heads of Nation” club is a good guy’s club, but Hillary would change all that for the better. I still don’t like you,Hillary (you old bitch), but good luck, and get in there and kick ass!!!

  14. Bob D Nero Says:

Alan, what’s a shovinist? Do you known what you’re saying?

  15. Larry Says:

Voting for Hillary is like voting for the same old BS we saw when Bill was in power…Abuse, Lies, Scandals, and Favortism….Vote for change…I would vote Republican than vote for Hillary.

  16. Janella Says:

I think WE have finally found Hillary’s voice. It is shrill. She is in attack mode and we are to mistakenly interpret that as leadership and strength. The Clinton machine attacks anyone who does not go along with them.

And by the way, Bill Clinton created NAFTA. Obama is absolutely right to point out that Hillary has supported and voted in favor of NAFTA and now she gives repeated speeches how “we have to get rid of that NAFTA” she makes the uninformed think it must be some Bush program. If one wants to learn of the true Hillary, two words: Juanita Broderick. Google that.

  17. Howard Says:

We don’t need a polarizing figure like Clinton at this time. I lived through that legacy and it is done. The power hungry devisiveness of a politician touting “experience” lacks passion. She predicts a “battle” with Republicans, and touts her accomplishments to this mindset as a virtue. She forgets they too are Americans. Our spirits would suffer.

The nation, and the troubling world needs a smart, genuine, person with drive and energy. A thoughtful leader, a healer, and a great thinker combined. It is preposterous to suggest that anyone has the experience which makes them qualified to hold the office of the President of the United States of America. It’s not about experience.

Obama can transend us. He has that special magnetism that only comes along every 40 years. This country suffers today from a unique history. The blacks in this country have a heritage that is unlike other immigrants who came to America to pursue the American dream. The majority of Blacks in America are descendents from slaves. As a nation, we all suffer from this legacy.

We could have a civil war that freed the slaves. But it did not create a reality in the minds. We could have a civil rights movement that changed the laws and after 40 years, a society that has progressed towards that original proclamation. But it will take a remarkable human being who can transend a nation and free the souls.

There are many blacks in this country that live in a reality that they are disenfranchised. This hopelessness is costly to our society. It packs our prisons. This is an important time in history for the right person to take the presidency to heights we have not seen since Lincoln. If he can transcend race, it will bring us all aboard the engine of prosperity as a united nation. It will jumpstart our economy, make us more productive, make us stronger. No key thing is more important to get our house in order now than to unite us as a people.

There is a tide sweeping the country and it is feeling like our destiny. It is Barack Obama.

The coach potato comment, forced me to get up, reach for my purse, and proceed to donate another $25 to the Obama campaign. Thanks for the motivation! ;)

  19. athy Says:

We still know so little about Barrack Obama’s foreign policy experience. How can people form opinions without this information?
Can anyone tell me what is Barrack Obama’s experience on foreign policy?

I read that last summer, Zbigniew Brzezinski (ZB) endorsed Obama for president see

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/24/AR2007082402127.html

    Lastyear,(ZB) was interviewed in http://www.counterpunch.org/brzezinski.html

ZB was one of main people responsible for convincing the US govt to arm the mujaheddin.

ZB was blind-sided by the rise of the Islamic fundamentalist groups. During the 1960’s and 1970’s he (ZB) was so focused on fighting the evil Russian empire that he completely ignored the existence of radical Islamic fundamentalism. He gave poor advice to President Carter. The ramifications of his (ZB)being so blind-sided helped to nurture the evolution and expansion of Osama Bin Ladin’s (and others) terrorist groups. In 1998, Brzezinski was interviewed by the French newspaper Nouvel Observateur on the topic of Afghanistan. Here is a link to excerpts from that interview-

    http://www.counterpunch.org/brzezinski.html

ZB revealed that CIA support for the mujaheddin had started before the 1979 Soviet invasion. Its purpose was to instigate a Soviet invasion, leading the Soviet Union into a Vietnam-War like conflict. Brzezinski viewed the end of the Soviet empire as worth the cost of strengthening militant Islamic groups.

Last summer, ZB endorsed Obama for president.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/24/AR2007082402127.html

What on earth was Obama thinking when he chose ZB as one of his foreign policy advisors??? http://www.nysun.com/article/71123

Why hasn’t any journalist questioned Sen. Obama about his choice of ZB as one of his top foreign policy advisors?

  20. Pug Says:

Barack better be ready for a good tongue lashing tonight. It’s Hail Mary time in the Clinton campaign.

Hillary’s vaunted “experience”, athy (forgot the K?), has given us a yes vote on the Iraq War and a yes vote on Kyl-Lieberman. That’s experience we can believe in? Don’t expect many people to get riled up about Z. Brzezinski.

Mostly, Clinton’s votes have been cast with her political viability as the primary consideration. That’s probably true of most politicians, but true nonetheless.
