Report: Spitzer May Resign Tonight

by @ 4:40 pm on March 10, 2008.

A television station in New York is reporting that New York Governor Elliot Spitzer may resign by the end of the day:

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Gov. Eliot Spitzer was not expected to continue as governor and may resign by Monday evening, sources told CBS 2, after it was reported that he was linked to a prostitution ring.

Reliable sources told CBS 2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer that Lt. Gov. David Paterson could be sworn in as governor as early as 7 p.m. Monday.

Interestingly enough, if when Spitzer steps down and Patterson becomes Governor he will be the first African-American Governor in New York’s history and the first Governor who is legally blind.

What will be more interesting to see unfold is how this will impact New York politics. Spitzer was widely believed to have ambitions beyond Albany, specifically Presidential ambitions. Those plans are, most likely, dead at this point. Another statewide politician that is likely to see his stature enhanced in the process of all this, though, is Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, son of the former Governor, who may choose to run for Governor when the current term ends in 2010.

I just heard Congressman King call Eliot (client # 9) the most self-righteous person he had ever met.

Maybe I am jaded but this type of behavior from politicians no longer shocks me. What I find inexplicable is the wife is always there by the disgraced politician’s side. I would hold my own press conference announcing my intention to file for divorce. The call girl got $ 4300 for this tryst. If I was the wife I would be mad about that waste of money as well.
