I’ve just got to say it.
Sorry Your Holiness, but this is total bullshit:
Lust, gluttony, greed and the rest of the seven deadly sins gathered in the 6th century will have to get used to a modern companion. A Vatican official has articulated seven new categories of sin “due to the phenomenon of globalization.”
“While sin used to concern mostly the individual, today it has mainly a social resonance,” Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti told L’Osservatore Romano, Vatican City’s local paper
Here’s a list of the new so-called sins:
1. “Bioethical’ violations such as birth control
2. “Morally dubious” experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty
So if I don’t recycle I’m a sinner just like the guy who cheats on his wife ? If I happen to be successful and earn a lot of money, I’m as bad as a murderer ? And what, pray tell, do you even mean by “contributing to widening divide between rich and poor” and “creating poverty.”
The Church may be right on some things, but when he comes to economics they’ve got their collective heads in the sand.

Heh, the Catholic Church breaks some of them itself by hoarding massive amounts of land, wealth and invests in oil giants, as well as companies that manufacture ammunitions. Does anybody really take these ass clowns seriously anymore?

The Christian church has always claimed all sins are equal in the eyes of God.
Desiring your neighbors wife is according to Christianity equal to sleeping with her and/or killing her.
And as long as you truly regret it and ask forgiveness afterwards your way to heaven is still open.

Yes, but this new list of sins indicates to me that the Church has fully bought in to the nonsense of environmentalism and socialism.
Fine for them, but not for me.

The Vatican didn’t do anything, one Monsignor did. This isn’t a matter of official doctrine or even an informal recommendation from the Pope. I say this as an atheist, by the way.

I’ve just blogged on this myself (http://layscience.net/?q=node/70), dismantling each of the “sins” in turn. Even if I were a Christian, I don’t see how you can follow a set of statements that - when you analyze them - are basically meaningless…

Umm, Like much of the xtian storybook, these tend to conflict… Not practicing birth control creates poverty and widens the gap between rich and poor…
