Spitzer’s Resignation: Just A Matter Of Time

by @ 11:29 am on March 11, 2008.

The New York Times reports this morning that aides to Governor Spitzer expect that he will resign:

Top aides to Gov. Eliot Spitzer said Tuesday morning that they expect the governor to resign his office, although the timing of the resignation remains uncertain.

Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson and his staff have begun laying the groundwork for him to take over as governor and are reaching out to members of the Legislature, the aides said.

And for the record, prostitution and money laundering aren’t the only scandals that have been swirling around New York’s 54th Governor:

Albany for months has been roiled by bitter fighting and accusations of dirty tricks. The Albany County district attorney is set to issue the results of his investigation into Mr. Spitzer’s first scandal, his aides’ involvement in an effort to tarnish Mr. Bruno.

Mr. Spitzer was elected in a landslide in 2006, capitalizing on his popularity he won as the “Sheriff of Wall Street” during eight years as attorney general. With a reputation for personal probity and independence, he pledged to bring higher ethical standards to the statehouse.

After promising change in Albany from “Day 1,” Mr. Spitzer was quickly plunged into political turmoil, and much of his legislative agenda was sidelined. He gained a reputation for being intemperate and alienated even some members of his own party.

Stick a fork in him, he’s done.

Update @12:55pm: CNN is reporting that transition talks are taking place today:

NEW YORK (CNN) — Aides to Gov. Eliot Spitzer are holding transition meetings with the lieutenant governor’s office, a top legislative staffer said as calls for the New York governor’s resignation heated up Tuesday.

The end is approaching quickly, I think.
