As expected, Barack Obama scored a strong victory over Hillary Clinton in yesterday’s Mississippi primary:
(CNN) — Sen. Barack Obama claimed victory by a wide margin over Sen. Hillary Clinton in Mississippi’s Democratic primary Tuesday.
“What we’ve tried to do is steadily make sure that in each state we are making the case about the need for change in this country. Obviously the people in Mississippi responded,” Obama told CNN after his win.
Mississippi had 33 pledged delegates up for grabs, which will be allocated proportionally.
With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Obama had 61 percent of the vote, compared with Clinton’s 37 percent.
And there was also delayed good news from last week’s Texas Caucuses:
Obama also finished first in the Texas Democratic caucuses. The caucuses were held last week, but the race was not called until Tuesday night.
Obama will get more delegates out of the state than Clinton, who won the state’s primary.
So here’s where do these two wins leave the delegate count:
Pledged Delegates
- Barack Obama — 1,395 delegates
- Hillary Clinton — 1,237 delegates
Obama +158
Total Delegates
- Barack Obama — 1,606 delegates
- Hillary Clinton — 1,484 delegates
Obama +122
Obama also continues to lead in the popular vote regardless of whether the results from Florida are included or not.
And that’s it for the last primary until Pennsylvania on April 22nd. Settle in for six weeks of back-biting, name-calling and dirty campaigning.
It’s gonna be fun kids !
