That appears to be what federal authorities are investigating now:
Federal authorities are seeking records involving payments to a political fund-raising consultant to Gov. Eliot Spitzer as part of their criminal investigation, according to two people with direct knowledge of the inquiry.
One person said the authorities had requested detailed documentation for thousands of dollars in reimbursements to the consultant, Kristian B. Stiles, who has worked on Mr. Spitzer’s campaigns since 2003 and directs national fund-raising. Another person with knowledge of the investigation said the authorities were particularly interested in hotel room charges during trips Mr. Spitzer took to West Palm Beach, Fla., Dallas and Washington, where he might have arranged to meet prostitutes.
If campaign funds were involved in this in any way, then Spitzer, and others, could be in very, very big trouble with the Feds.
Meanwhile, the New York Daily News reports that the prostitute at the center of all this has been granted immunity:
The high-class hooker whose tryst with Eliot Spitzer brought down the governor has been given immunity to testify in the investigation of a worldwide prostitution ring.
Word that Manhattan federal prosecutors have given Ashley Alexandra Dupré immunity came as members of the Spitzer administration were feeling high heat in the expanding probe.
Workers for Spitzer’s election campaign have hired lawyers, preparing to meet with probers looking into whether Spitzer illegally used campaign donations to get to and from his trysts with hookers.
It’s not all that surprising that they would give Dupray immunity even though she clearly committed crimes herself. She’s a relatively small fish in what is looking to be a pond filled with some tasty prey.
