Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

2008 Baseball Predictions

by @ 10:09 am on April 1, 2008.

I’ve never done this before, but I figured that, this year, I’d take a stab at making predictions about how this year’s baseball season will end. I’ll revisit this at least a few times between now and the end of the season and definitely at the All-Star Break.

American League East

  1. New York Yankees
  2. Boston Red Sox
  3. Toronto Blue Jays
  4. Baltimore Orioles
  5. Tampa Bay Devil Rays

As long as they stay healthy and young pitchers like Joba Chamberlin can deliver on their performances from last year, then the Yankees seem well-positioned to win the AL East this year. Their only major competition, as usual, will be Boston — Toronto, Baltimore, and Tampa Bay will continue to dwell in the cellar.

American League Central

  1. Cleveland Indians
  2. Detroit Tigers
  3. Minnesota Twins
  4. Chicago White Sox
  5. Kansas City Royals

After several years of coming close, I think this will be Cleveland’s year to win the divsion.

American League West

  1. Los Angeles Angels
  2. Oakland Athletics
  3. Seattle Mariners
  4. Texas Rangers

This will be another lop-sided division. The Angels and Athletics are likely to battle down the stretch, but Seattle and Texas will be out of contention by August. The Angels seem stronger, though, so I think they’ll pull it out.

American League Wild-Card: Boston Red Sox.

American League Championship Series: Yankees vs. Indians

American League Champion: Yankees

Now onto the senior circuit:

National League East:

  1. New York Mets
  2. Philadelphia Phillies
  3. Atlanta Braves
  4. Washington Nationals
  5. Florida Marlins

With the addition of Johann Santana, the Mets seem unstoppable this year as long as they stay healthy.

National League Central

  1. Chicago Cubs
  2. St. Louis Cardinals
  3. Cincinnati Reds
  4. Milwaukee Brewers
  5. Houston Astros

Yes, that’s right I’m picking the Cubbies. Call this the sentimental pick. One of these years, I’ll be right.

National League West

  1. Colorado Rockies
  2. Los Angeles Dodgers
  3. Arizona Diamondbacks
  4. San Francisco Giants
  5. San Diego Padres

No real logic here. This one is basically a wild-ass guess. I’d like to see the Torre-led Dodgers do well, but it will take some time to convince me they’ve changed.

National League Wild Card: Phillies

National League Championship Series: Phillies v. Mets

National League Champion: Mets

World Series: Yankees v. Mets

World Series Champion: Yankees in 7

So long as Hillary Clinton is a Senator from NY, the Yankees will not win the World Series. It is the Curse of Clinton, the “lifelong” Yankees “fan.”
