This season, Alex Rodriguez will earn more than the entire roster of the Florida Marlins combined:
April 1 (Bloomberg) — New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will make more money this season than the 33-man roster of the Florida Marlins, the Associated Press reported.
Rodriguez, who signed a record $275 million contract extension in December, tops Major League Baseball’s salary list at $28 million, exceeding the Marlins’ opening-day roster and disabled-list total of $21.8 million, AP said, citing a study of contract terms. Rodriguez has been the highest-paid player for eight straight years.
Well, you know, it is the Marlins we’re talking about. I’d take odds that A-Rod could beat the entire team on his own given the way they’ve performed over the past several years.
Of more interest is this little tidbit:
The Yankees have the largest payroll at $209.1 million. Detroit is second at $138.7 million, up from 12th last year after acquiring Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis during the offseason, AP said. The New York Mets ($138.3 million) are third and defending World Series-champion Boston is fourth ($133.4 million).
Now tell me, who ever thought that the Tigers would have the second highest payroll in baseball ?
