This may turn out to be a case of counting your chickens before they’ve hatched, but former Governor Jim Gilmore’s campaign is claiming that it has enough delegates to next month’s convention to win the GOP Senate nomination:
Former governor James S. Gilmore III said today that he has secured enough delegates to win the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate next month but his rival, Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William), disputed that.
“The race is not over,” Marshall said.
Delegates will chose between Gilmore and Marshall at the Republican convention in Richmond late next month. The winner will compete with former governor Mark R. Warner (D) in November for the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. John Warner.
“A clear majority of the convention delegates representing more than 6,000 votes have committed to support Governor Gilmore,” Matt Wells, Gilmore campaign political director, said in a statement. “A solid turnout at the GOP convention will be needed to seal victory.”
I guess we’ll see in a few weeks, huh ?
