Yea, I’d Call This An Example Of Police Over-Reach

by @ 6:35 pm on May 9, 2008.

A Texas man arrested for failing to use a turn signal:

MELISSA, Tx — Mark Robinson was driving through downtown Melissa last week when he was pulled over for failing the use his turn signal.

But instead of getting a ticket, the officer took the 24-year-old to jail.

He was booked, strip searched, and sat for 3 hours with criminals. “People talking about using drugs and shooting heroin. They asked me what I was in there for and I said a turn signal violation,” said Robinson.

Because, you know, we’ve got to get dangerous scofflaws like this off the street.

Don’t be so quick to rush to judgement. Like as not there is more to the story. We are only hearing one side of it.

I would also note that the law in Virginia is to use your turn signal when changing lanes and turning. While this punishment is harsh (particularly if the details of this case are as simple as the article suggests; does challenging the officer mean questions, or a temper-tantrum?), I would like to see more people pulled over for this. Too many times have I dealt with someone who did something completely unexpected while on the road, bringing about dangerous conditions, and considering an accident my brother was in recently (fortunately, no one was injured), it seems to me that people need to use their turn signals.

There must be more than what is depicted here. If I pull you over for a moving violation, I can take you before a magistrate IF, you refuse to sign the summons or there is some question as to your identity. The magistrate will determine whether you go to jail or not.

I can not believe that the man was jailed on a turn signal violation. There is more to this.
