Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Of Politics And Coffee

by @ 1:23 pm on May 23, 2008.

Sometimes, I feel sorry for people on the left and the right who, out of some seeming obsession, find something political in, quite literally everything.

Take, for example, Michelle Malkin.

Back at the beginning of the month, she announced that she was giving up Starbucks, not because she didn’t like the coffee anymore, or because the service had gone bad, but because of politics:

I got hooked on Starbucks in Seattle more than a decade ago. It was the social thing to do. It became an occupational necessity, then an unbreakable habit. I put up with the “corporate social responsibility” mumbo-jumbo, which the company leavened with an occasional bone to conservatives. As I’ve confessed to you before, I’m not a morning person–and those caramel macchiatos have powered me through many an a.m. The taste and the buzz outweighed the conservative guilt.

Over the past weeks, however, Starbucks has left an increasingly bad taste.

David Boaz wrote of the company’s ridiculous policy barring gift card purchasers from customizing personalized cards with the phrase “Laissez Faire.”

Then there’s the price. A grande caramel macchiato puts you out $5. Two or three of those a week adds up. And in these times, every penny counts.

Lots of other consumers are coming to the same conclusion. Starbucks’ profits are down 28 percent.

So this weekend, I quit cold turkey.

I’m done.

Well, Starbucks ultimately did let Boaz get his Laissez Faire card so I’m not sure what the uproar is there.

As far as I know, David is still drinking Starbucks.

But, anyway……Michelle announced that day that she was switching to Dunkin’ Donuts and wrote about that choice later in the month.

Now, apparently, she’s wondering if it’s time to give up on DD.

Why ? You guessed right if you said it’s because of politics again:

Sigh. You all know I’ve been a fan of Dunkin Donuts for quite some time–and have touted their strong position in favor of immigration enforcement.

Charles Johnson notes, and many readers have e-mailed about, Dunkin Donuts’ spokeswoman Rachel Ray’s clueless sporting of a jihadi chic keffiyeh in a recent DD ad campaign. I’m hoping her hate couture choice was spurred more by ignorance than ideology.

Is Ray’s blunder worth boycotting DD over? I’ll be interested to hear the company’s take. At this point, I’m going to give the management the benefit of the doubt. They have braved boycott threats and attacks over their lonely, principled stance against illegal immigration. Given their pro-rule of law, America first position, I highly doubt the executive offices are filled with moonbats who endorse Ray’s keffiyeh chic.

Here’s the picture she’s talking about:

Michelle, sweetie, it’s a flippin’ scarf. Calm the heck down, `kay ?

Personally, I’m considering advocating a Dunkin’ boycott simply because their spokesperson is the most annoying celebrity on the planet.

But that’s just me.

I am pretty strong in my own political opinions, but boycotting Starbucks over politics is just dumb.

I’ll drink my Pike Place while blogging and enjoy it, until you pry that cup from my cold, dead hands.

Update: I think I’ve figured it out. Michelle has to stop drinking that carmel machiatto crap, or whatever the Dunkin’ equivalent of it is, and drink real coffee — with an occasional nod toward sugar — for a change. Maybe then she won’t be so uptight and xenophobic.

I’m so sick of hearing about MM. She’s way overrated and has become laughable.

I made 3 easy choices. I make my coffee at home.I love it with Sambuca, but that isnot great for revving up the engine. I gave up Dunkin Donuts when I became a cop. I now but a 1/2 dozen Entemanns occasionally since I retired as a cop. I use my to record TV shows so I can avoid most commercials that I find totally stupid.

    Holy crap.

No wonder Republicans can’t win wars anymore. It’s a freakin’ donut commercial people. There’s no global jihadist conspiracy. She’s wearing a #%$@ paisley scarf that the wardrobe dept. probably bought at Target.

    Wow. Just like, wow.

I came here from Malkin’s little cave, where she’s huddled in a defensive crouch, ever vigilant against the fatwah with chocolate sprinkles and a medium coffee.

How sad that Republicans have become so paralyzed with fear that they believe even the simple purchase of a donut is fraught with peril and far-reaching national security implications.

    “Mainstreaming terror!”

    “Jihadi chic!”

    “Hate couture!”

Just look around the internet and watch the chickenhawks run. Good Lord.

And they wonder why nobody takes them seriously anymore…

[...] at least that means Michelle Malkin can go back to drinking her lattes. Maybe now she’ll calm down a bit.   [...]

Google Michelle Malkin images and check out her B/W fringed cheerleader outfit. Now I ask, will the real terrorist shake her pompoms?

While I agree this is ridiculous because her scarf looks simply like a scarf, I’d like to play the devel’s advocate. We must remember symbols have always represented an important part of all cultures throughout time. Had Rachel Ray worn a swastika arm band or white hood the world would have been appalled. I am amazed that certain forms of dress have become en vogue. As an expatriate from the U.S. it disturbs me that we can be so insensitive especially after 911 and I can only attribute this to ignorance. For many of us living elsewhere in the world, we see up close what these symbols represent. These organizations and governments actively support the suppression of women, the banning of freedom of religion and speech, and the tacit acceptance of violence against innocent human beings all in the name of a cause or belief. Have we become so P.C. that we refuse to tell the truth or are we somehow hoping that our own human/democratic values are also shared by all? Read, listen and observe. Actions always speak louder than words. Remember, symbols are powerful messages!

Betty you’re an international idiot. HOw are you gonna preach acceptance of other cultures when you down right insult muslims in your little tirade. Contrary to many “ignorant” people’s beliefs, muslim culture is not bent on repressing women, just cus your culture is different from theirs doesn’t mean they are totally wrong. I HATE REPUBLICANS i hope you all go to HELL
michelle malkin is the female Bill O’Reilly, only she hides behind some stupid blog rather than detracting democrats face to face.
