Hillary Apologizes For Robert Kennedy/Obama Remarks

by @ 6:33 am on May 24, 2008.

It didn’t take look for the Clinton campaign to realize that their candidate had screwed up royally when she used Robert Kennedy’s assassination as one of the reasons she’s staying in a race she can’t possibly win:

“Earlier today I was discussing the Democratic primary history, and in the course of that discussion mentioned the campaigns that both my husband and Senator Kennedy waged in California in June 1992 and 1968 and I was referencing those to make the point that we have had nomination primary contests that go into June,” Clinton said.

“That’s a historic fact. The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator [Edward] Kennedy and I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation, and particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that, whatsoever. My view is that we have to look to the past and to our leaders who have inspired us and give us a lot to live up to, and I’m honored to hold Senator [Robert] Kennedy’s seat in the United States Senate from the state of New York and have the highest regard for the entire Kennedy family.”

As Ann Althouse said, that’s not an apology, it’s bullshit.

There’s a big difference between 2008 and 1968. This year, the nomination process will be over in June and we all know who the nominee will be. In `68, the nomination fight had barely begun when Kennedy won California and it’s outcome was by no means certain.

I voted for Obama in the primaries because I think he is the best candidate, and I stand by that. But I have admired Hillary’s strenth. She is a good person and also a good candidate. She didn’t say anything wrong and she has nothing to apologize for.

I guess the emporer in his new clothes shouldn’t have apologized either.
