Surprising News Of The Day

by @ 8:12 am on June 1, 2008.

For those of you political history buffs who think that the Whig Party died out with the Presidency of Millard Filmore, well, I’ve got some news for you.

Not only are they back.

But they’re endorsing candidates for President:

Bob Barr served four terms in Congress. He works tirelessly to help preserve our fundamental right to privacy and our other civil liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Along with this, Bob is committed to helping elect leaders who will strive for smaller government, lower taxes and abundant individual freedom. Long a friend and ally of Ron Paul in Congress, Bob Barr is also the nominee of the Libertarian Party.

Please, this time, do not vote for the lesser of two evils!

The major parties have again nominated deeply flawed nominees who do not represent America, but are the chosen favorites of powerful persons and interests outside of our country, who wish to pillage and destroy our Nation, and use our armed forces at their will.

Well, okay I guess.

But if the Whigs are back, does that mean we’re about to see a revival of ancient American political parties ? Another Anti-Masonic Party, perhaps ? Or maybe a return of the Free Soil Party ? Or how about the Anti-Nebraska Party (although I personally don’t have anything against Nebraska……Michigan on the other hand ;) ) ?

One thing to keep in mind with the Whig Party was the reason for the name, which was a reference to British politics. The British whigs were opposed to the monarchy, which controlled everything. Similarly, those who stood in opposition to Andrew Jackson and the dominant Democratic Party he created began calling themselves the Whig Party. It was an organizational tool, but it also was an underhanded shot against Jackson — a way to continue the King Andrew narrative that opponents were trying to sell.

In our modern politics, there is no current force as powerful as the Jacksonian Democrats. The argument could have been made in 2004 that Bush Republicans held such a dominant role. But that power structure has obviously fallen apart since then.
