There seems to be an uptick in speculation that Delaware Senator Joe Biden could be the man to join Barack Obama on the Democratic ticket:
I’m just passing on the latest I’m hearing–that Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) is moving up on the list of potential running mates for presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). While Obama’s heart may go towards Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine–his head takes him to a more experienced pick, a Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) or Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The advantages of picking Biden over someone like Bayh or Kaine are pretty obvious. Biden has the foreign policy experience that Obama — and Bayh and Kaine — lack, as well as the connections in Congress that Obama would need to push his agenda through.
At the same time, though, Biden does have disadvantages. Twenty years ago, he withdrew from the Presidential race over a plagiarism scandal. He also has a tendency to open his mouth and talk without thinking — whether he’s discussing the ethnic makeup of convenience store workers in Delaware, or his party’s presumptive nominee.
So, while putting Biden on the ticket may look good on paper, it may not work out so well in practice.
