Olympic History You Can’t Deny

As much as I’ve purposely ignored the Olympics, it’s impossible to deny some coverage to Michael Phelps:

BEIJING — A journey that started four years ago after his six-gold performance in Athens and included 17 swims over nine days here ended triumphantly for Michael Phelps on Sunday.

Phelps earned his unprecedented eighth Olympic gold medal of the 2008 Olympics as he swam the butterfly leg of the Americans’ world-record win in the 4×100m medley relay to close out the swimming competition at the Water Cube.

This bring back memories to me of when I first started taking swiming lessons at the age of four.

Which transports us all back to 1972, and Mark Spitz and his then re-breaking performance. As a kid just starting out in the water, it was something of an inspiration.

Yes, I quickly learned that I was not going to be the next Mark Spitz, but that was okay. I just remember that being able swim laps was a really cool thing to do in the `70’s

And, while I may never have been on the caliber of Mark Spitz, just being caught up in that era brings back memories that I won’t forget.

Therefore, notwithstanding the sins committed by those enslaving China……..

Fourteen Gold Medels.  That’s worthy of some credit.

Congratulations Michael.
