The McCain Campaign is out with yet another ad appealing to Hillary Clinton’s supporters:
This is interesting on many levels, not the least of them being, that this is the first time that I can remember a Presidential candidate openly appealing to the people who supported a losing candidate of the opposing party and, in effect, openly inviting party disunity.
It’s truly a new era in American politics.
Of course, there’s still the question of whether or not this is a wise strategy to follow:
I could see the ad being very effective. But it also tosses a big softball to Hillary Clinton, who will speak to a national audience on Tuesday. The risk to the Republicans can be summarized in five words: “Shame on You, John McCain”. A finger-wagging, how-dare-you moment by either of the Clintons at the convention — but especially Hillary — could be both effective and therapeutic, especially when coupled with a reminder that McCain voted against measures like SCHIP (and voted to impeach her husband).
And so, once again, the attention of the nation is focused on the Clintons. Which, after all, is exactly where they want it to be.
And just what does Hillary have to say about all of this ?
Speaking to reporters after her address to the New York delegation, Clinton offered delegates no instruction on how to cast their votes, Amie Parnes reports.
“I will be telling my delegates that I will vote for Barack Obama,” she said. “How they vote is a more personal decision. They want to have their chance to vote for me. That is what traditionally happens … some people are having to make up their minds because there are arguments pulling them both ways.”
That, my friends, is what you call a non-endorsement endorsement.
