McCain Veep Rumors: Maybe It’s Not Pawlenty

by @ 6:31 am on August 29, 2008. Filed under 2008 Election, 2008 Republican Veepstakes, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Politics

Is it possible that the news about Tim Pawlenty being John McCain’s Vice-Presidential choice was all a big head-fake (or the case of any overconfident blogger at Red State) ?

Well, consider this.

First, as of this morning, Mitt Romney is the only person confirmed to be in Dayton this morning with John McCain:

So — two senior McCain campaign officials confirm that John McCain will appear with his vice presidential pick in Dayton, Ohio tomorrow at noon ET.

And Gov. Mitt Romney expects to be in Dayton, Ohio tomorrow, having been asked there by the McCain campaign, a reliable source close to Romney says. (Another source says Romney will be in Boston.)

Gov. Tim Pawlenty is currently at the governors’ mansion in Minneapolis. There is no guidance about his schedule.

We don’t know if all the VP hopefuls have been summoned to Dayton; we don’t know if some have. (MIke Huckabee won;’t be going.)

It would be weird, wouldn’t it, to force the losers in this contest to appear onstage with the winners mere hours after they got the news…..

Yea, it would be.

Also, another blogger reports that the Pawlenty story isn’t true at all:

Just repeating what I reported in the Twitter thread, but I have a trustworthy source telling me that the GOP VP nominee will be someone other than Tim Pawlenty.

That’s all I can report to you because that’s all that I know. My source believes he knows the identity of the actual VP nominee but will not tell me who it is. None of this is 100%. It’s possible that I’m being played, and it’s possible that my source is. But I don’t think so, and I believe it’s more likely that the McCain campaign was playing the media.

Meanwhile, Roll Call reports that Pawlenty plans to be at the Minnesota State Fair at Noon tomorrow when McCain is in Dayton:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, on the short list of possible GOP vice presidential picks, said he plans to be home at the state fair for a radio show appearance Friday, when Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is expected to announce his running mate.

Pawlenty was the main attraction at a press conference to highlight Republicans’ argument that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is “not ready” to be president. Pawlenty referred all questions about the ticket to the McCain campaign.

“On issues relating to the vice presidency, that’s obviously Sen. McCain’s decision,” Pawlenty said. “The McCain campaign will be making those announcements [Friday] presumably.”

The only thing that’s certain this morning is that it appears that Joe Lieberman is out of the running.

We’ll find out in about 5 hours.

With all the up-down-up-down emotional roller coaster on Intrade, I still feel it’s Romney. John McCain is smart enough to pick a proven primary force, not just his buddies, no matter that they may have some good qualities. He needs a boffo fundraiser, vote-getter and presidential quality leader who can step in at any moment. Romney has the cred, the experience, and is the first choice of conservatives. Don’t worry about the few evangelicals who will whine, they’ll get over their attachment to Huckabee when faced with an Obama presidency. I’m an evangelical and I have no problem with Romney, he’s the most qualified and that’s waht you go for. Romney will tear Biden apart in debates. MCCAIN-ROMNEY 08 is still my bet, and I’d be thrilled.

If it’s not Romney I’m not voting for McCain.
