Last night’s Saturday Night Live kicked off with another Tina Fey-Amy Poehler skit, this one parodying Palin’s interviews with CBS’s Katie Couric earlier this week (see here, here, and here):
The funniest moment for me came when Fay/Palin tells Couric/Poehler that she wants to “phone a friend.” Frankly, there were several times during last week’s interview when that probably would’ve helped her a bit.
The scary thing about Fey’s impersonation of Palin is that it really wasn’t all that over the top. The Gibson interview was bad, but you could have chalked that up to nerves and a candidate who’s used to facing down local television reporters in Anchorage, not network news anchors. The Couric interview, though, was terrible — not only were most of her answers to the questions that Couric asked vapid, but one would have thought that after a month on the campaign trail she would have become more polished in these situations. If anything, she did worse with Couric than she did with Gibson.
All of which makes Thursday’s debate must-see-tv. Will Palin bounce back or will she crash and burn along with other Vice-Presidential contenders like Dan Quayle and James Stockdale ? Tune in and see for yourself.
