Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

It’s Called Freedom Of Speech, Live With It

by @ 9:29 am on October 2, 2008.

The residents on one street in Barefoot Bay, Florida aren’t too happy with Andy Lacasse:

0002(42)BAREFOOT BAY — A sign in one man’s front yard has stirred up a controversy in his community.

Neighbors of Andy Lacasse said the sign, which reads “Obama Half-Breed Muslin [sic],” breaches the fine line between free speech and inappropriateness.

“I got nothing good to say about Obama,” Lacasse told News 13. “If I see anybody touching that sign, I got a club sitting right over there.”

Lacasse put the sign on his lawn Saturday. A Korean War veteran, he said he was a registered Democrat until Obama won the nomination.

“That’s the Democratic Party. They’re nothing but a bunch of cutthroats,” Lacasse said. “Like I always said, you show me an honest politician, I’ll show you an honest thief.”

Lacasse’s neighbors said they are not all content with letting him show his opinion where everyone can see it.

“When you use words in that nature, people tend to discount anything you have to say,” said Steve Rice, who lives a couple streets away from Lacasse.

Now, if you were to tell me that this guy is an ignorant boob, I’d probably agree with you. If you were to tell me he needs a spell checker before he posts ignorant crap on his front lawn, I’d say absolutely.

But he has the right to be an ignorant boob who can’t spell if he chooses, and to express his opinions.

It is exactly fact patterns like this that ought to make all libertarians love homeowner associations. I remain befuddled as to why so many do not.

  2. Alan Gideon Says:

KipEsquire seems to be confusing freedom of speech with property values, unless he believes that the two are incompatible.

    Alan,

Kip is right and you are wrong.

The First Amendment applies to political entities, not private ones. HOA’s and POA’s are purely private entities and therefore should be entitled to make whatever rules they want, including rules forbidding any political signs within the boundaries of the community.
