Another battleground state poll shows that Barack Obama has a distinct advantage going into tonight’s debate:
On the eve of the penultimate presidential debate, a new TIME/CNN poll shows John McCain still struggling in states won by George W. Bush in 2004, a sign that last week’s vice presidential debate had little effect on voter opinion.

New Hampshire:
Obama 53%, McCain 45%
Obama 51%, McCain 43%, Barr 3%, Nader 1%Wisconsin:
Obama 51%, McCain 46%
Obama 50%, McCain 42%, Nader 4%, Barr 1%Ohio:
Obama 50%, McCain 47%
Obama 48%, McCain 45%, Nader 3%, Barr 2%North Carolina:
Obama 49%, McCain 49%
Obama 49%, McCain 48%, Barr 2%Indiana:
McCain 51%, Obama 46%
McCain 48%, Obama 46%, Barr 5%
A few observations:
- New Hampshire and Wisconsin are now firmly in Obama’s camp. To the extent McCain was thinking he could reverse the `04 result in either of those states, that is looking fairly slim at this point.
- Ohio continues to move in Obama’s favor
- If John McCain is struggling in Indiana and North Carolina, then you know thinks are bad. This much is true, if somehow Obama manages to win Indiana in four weeks, then we’re looking at an Electoral victory for him on the scale of George H.W. Bush’s in 1988.
Tonight is McCain’s last chance to start turning these numbers around.
