Why 2008 Won’t Be Like 2004

Three simply pictures illustrate quite plainly why this year will not play out the way 2008 did, and why McCain is in the trouble that he’s in

First, here is the projection from Electoral Vote.com from October 22, 2004:

By this time four years ago, Bush was already ahead in enough states to win the election.

Here’s the final Electoral College map from that election:

Basically, between October 22nd and Election day, Bush held on to the lead he already had, and picked off New Mexico and  from Kerry.

Now, here’s the map of Electoral-Vote.com’s prediction for today:

McCain is losing in nine states that Bush won in 2004.

Even if McCain manages to eke out wins in five of those states — Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, and Missouri to pick the ones where he might have a chance — he still loses.
