Palin in 2012 ? Not So Fast, Sarah

Working on the theory that it’s never too early to start talking about the next Presidential election, even if that means talking about it before the 2008 election is even over, Newsweek has some interesting numbers regarding the contenders for the Republican nomination should John McCain lose:

If John McCain is not elected president, which one of the following three possible candidates would you be most likely to support for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012?Romney: 35%
Huckabee: 26%
Palin: 20%

The poll also differentiates between what it calls “Traditional Republicans”, which roughly correlates to fiscallly conservative Republicans for whom social issues like abortion and gay marriage are less important and “Social Issue Republicans”, for whom issues like abortion and gay marriage are most important:

Traditional Republicans
Romney: 42%
Huckabee: 23%
Palin: 19%

Social Issue Republicans
Huckabee: 31%
Romney: 30%
Palin: 23%

And that doesn’t take into account what might happen if someone like Bobby Jindal enters the race. At the most, Palin would appear to be little more than a spoiler for Mike Huckabee.
