Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Quote Of The Day: I Guess This Means Sarah Palin Is A Socialist Edition

by @ 6:23 pm on October 28, 2008.

Sarah Palin describes the economy of the People’s Republic State of Alaska:

“We’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. so we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.”

State ownership of the means of production ?

“Sharing the wealth” ?

Sounds an awful lot like socialism to me.

That is the reason I do not think she can ever relate to the rest of the nation.

  2. Jonathan Says:

Too bad the media focused on her pregnant daughter instead of stuff like this when she was announced.

(Before she was picked, her name was already in my head for instituting excessive taxes on oil, bringing record revenues to a state that also brings in by far the most $$$ in earmarks per capita)

  3. Spank That Donkey Says:

Might it occur to you that she is talking about taking excess revenues generated by the royalties coming from mining and drilling and lowering taxes on the states taxpayers? She has, by eliminating direct taxes, and sending royalties directly to State Residents…. From the State to the individual.

Versus raising taxes on any one particular individual or group and redistributing them to another?

Your whining is getting old. If you think Ron Paul wants you to vote for Obama literally, or by not voting at all for McCain Palin for the benefit of Hussein have at it.

If you think we Conservatives are all going to rally to Ron Paul in the wreckage…. You just may want to rethink that scenario there buddy!

We’ll admire your political suicide about as much as we Conservatives admire Islamofacist suicide bombers… It’s fun to watch you explode, but when you start taking us with you, it ain’t funny at all….

    The choice is yours.

State ownership of the “means of production” ? “Means of production”?

Stretching it just a bit there aren’t you Doug?

Look, it’s a fact that Ron Paul did not win the primaries. Face up to it. Get over it. It’s time now, (way past time, actually), to pick a candidate that most closely suits your priorities and values and move on.

Either that or come on out of the Obama closet and set yourself free my friend.

You mean like the windfall profits tax that she imposed on the oil and gas industry ? I thought Republicans were supposed to be against stuff like that.

Actually, I became disillusioned with Ron Paul a long time ago — although he does have the advantage of being the only Republican in Congress who has spoken out consistently and forcefully against the crap-sandwich bailout that McCain voted for and Palin supported — so this isn’t about him at all.

What Republicans do after Tuesday depends on whether they want to rebuild the party into one that people will actually vote for, or if the want to go down the Limbaugh-Hannity-Coulter path. Spending your time emphasizing Barack Obama’s middle name isn’t really accomplishing anything, you do realize that, don’t you ?

I don’t support Obama, but I’m not voting for McCain just because he tells me I need to be afraid of his opponent.

And if the GOP had nominated a candidate that actually believed in limited government, then maybe they’d have gotten my vote this year.

  6. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Alton,

As I said to STD, this has nothing to do with Ron Paul and everything to do with the fact that the GOP has sold its soul.

Why should I care about John McCain’s “socialism” rhetoric when he supported a bill that is being used by his party’s President to acquire government stakes in banks and insurance companies ? That’s socialism if anything is.

Why should I support John McCain when he treated the First Amendment like a footnote in his crusade for “clean” government which turned out to be nothing but an incumbency protection act ?

As I said in a comment on Carl Kilo’s blog, I fell for the “lesser of two evils” argument in the last two Presidential elections and it got me a President who has increased the size of government at pace that would have made LBJ blush. I’m not falling for that again.

  7. John Doe Says:

Yo, idiot. Alaska was like that BEFORE Palin became Governor. You saying because Alaska is like that is somehow Sarah Palin’s fault is like blaming GWB for the Federal Income Tax. Course, reason and logic are foreign to liberals.

  8. Doug Mataconis Says:

As long as Sarah Palin is going to tough her 1 year and 11 months of experience as Governor of Alaska as sufficient qualification for her to be Vice President, I think it’s fair to take a look at just what kind of state she governs.

And as long as she and McCain are going to throw around a loaded term like “socialist”, then all I can say is what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

  9. John Doe Says:

Sure, you can “throw it around” anything you want. Why bother with silly little things such as truth and facts and logic. The truth, however, is that Obama really, truly is a socialist. You are just trying to make that not seem so bad. Novel approach, because the Obama talking points are more clever–they just lie about it.

  10. Doug Mataconis Says:

    John,

Show me one piece of evidence that Barack Obama has advocated government ownership of private companies, and I’ll accept your argument that he’s a socialist.

Is he a liberal ? Yes

Does he believe in progressive income taxation ? Sure he does. But, you know what ? So does John McCain.

  11. John Doe Says:

Is he that stupid to come out and admit it? No. Was he once a member of the New Party, a socialist party in America? Yes.

  12. Wisco Says:

“Lowering taxes on state taxpayers”- Ha! Only the wealthy oil industry pays in Alaska, the residents don’t pay taxes, they get a big check from the government every year for sitting on their ass and drinking beer. Welfare for everyone, paid for by the rich. If Palin has/had a beef with that, she would argue that the oil companies KEEP their revenue and that lazy Alaskans go to work. BUT she instead INCREASED the royalty fees and INCREASED the Alaska welfare-for-no-work program. Don’t believe me? Look at her own tax returns.
