I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Barack Obama Is Not Bill Clinton

by @ 4:30 pm on November 7, 2008. Filed under Barack Obama, Politics

The thought occurred to me yesterday that, although I disagree with most of what he said during the campaign and will likely oppose much of what he does as President, I don’t find myself reacting to President-Elect Obama with the same disdain, if not utter contempt, that I did to President-Elect Bill Clinton.

The reason ? Well, as Patterico notes in this post, Barack Obama is basically a decent man:

I have said many times that I’m not blind to the other side of the coin. Obama played the race card on more than one occasion. He said false things about John McCain. He has associated with some sleazy and awful people for political advantage. And the list goes on. Again, we’re not talking about a perfect guy.

But we’re not talking about an evil or a bad man either. We’re talking about a good and decent man, who has done some bad things, and who believes in far-left policies that will harm this country.

At this point, we’ll be better off if we focus on the policies. And that’s the last thing I intend to say on this subject.

Me too.

Others may engage in the vitrol and venom if they wish, I will not. Battle on the field of ideas does not require the use of weapons of mass destruction.

“basically a decent man” — don’t miss all the powerful evidence in the comments section, such as this from as late as today:

    >>The Decent One just mocked Nancy Reagan (recovering from a fall) at his first press conference. He says he won’t be holding any seances to talk with dead presidents like Nacy Reagan.

You’re right, Pat. Good Man. Good heart. God Bless our classy president-elect.<<

I think that conservatives who hate Obama already for some reason or another will be proved wrong. I think he’s more moderate than they think, he’s more inclusive than they think, he’s more pragmatic and imbued with common-sense than they think. We’ll see how many change their minds after four years.

Of course, there are some who will hate Obama no matter what. That’s because they judge him on other criteria than the content of his character.

Very decent of Obama to belittle the ailing Nancy Reagan today.
