I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

And while it went to the "center" on economics, it went to the right on social issues, which is what costs votes in areas like Northern Virginia, the Northeast, and states like Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada.

I disagree in part. The party was too much in the "center" on economic issues. There hasn't been serious spending discipline, and the size and scope of government has grown exponentially.

Voters prefer a government that does less on all fronts, all things being equal. The GOP gave them a government that did and attempted more on all fronts. That's why the GOP lost.

The real problem was that McCain scared off the base of his own party... if it hadn't been for Palin, he probably would have lost by double digits.

The GOP has two problems, they are like you say stuck on going right when things go wrong. All you have to do is look at the survey Fox did today on the popularity of Palin. 69% of Republicans think she should head the ticket in 2012 when matched against Huckaby and Romney. And this after she just lost, and is widely credited for scaring off the moderates Republicans need to win.

The other problem the GOP faces is very much tied in with the first, they have to change the Demographics of their party. Being the party of geriatric whites isn't going to win you a majority any more.
