New York Congressman Charles Rangel says he knows who the state’s next Senator will be:
RAFAEL PI ROMAN: Lastly, I know you talked to Governor Patterson about the replacement for Senator Clinton, I was wondering if you have any favorites among the candidates that are being discussed?
CONGESSMAN RANGEL: Well the governor has already made up his mind and he shared it with me, and I support that he’s going to select the best possible candidate that he can.
RAFAEL PI ROMAN: When are we going to find that out?
CONGESSMAN RANGEL: When he selects him.
So, there are a few possibilities here:
- Rangel really does know who Patterson will pick, and knows that the person in question is male, meaning it’s not Caroline Kennedy
- Rangel knows who Patterson will pick and his using the pronoun “him” in the universal sense.
- Rangel has no idea who the pick is and is just bloviating.
At this point, option # 3 is just as likely as the other two.
