Memo To The GOP: Don’t Go Down This Road

by @ 12:58 pm on February 22, 2009.

Ben Smith passes along this tidbit from Alabama:

Another local resident asked [Alabama Senator Richard] Shelby if there was any truth to a rumor that appeared during the presidential campaign concerning Obama’s U.S. citizenship, or lack thereof.

“Well his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven’t seen any birth certificate,” Shelby said. “You have to be born in America to be president.”

Is Shelby really trying to stoke the fires of Obama Derangement Syndrome here ?

I would hope not, and I would hope that the rest of the GOP recognizes that hitching political fortunes to something with no legal and factual merit is not the way out of the wilderness.

I hope they get your memo. This was a non issue during the campaign and is brainless to even hint at the issue now.
