Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

As expected, and after a delay necessitated by the late arrival of Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, the Senate granted final approval to President Obama’s “stimulus” bill late last night:
WASHINGTON — Congress on Friday approved a $787 billion economic stimulus measure, meeting the crushing mid-February deadline that Democrats had set for adopting the centerpiece of President [...]

59 Votes And Counting

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Politics

The Senate is one vote, and one traveling Senator, away from passing the stimulus bill:
The stimulus vote in the Senate is being left open for Sherrod Brown’s late (10:30 pm.?) return to the chamber.
Brown is in Ohio for his mother’s funeral:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Sherrod Brown is returning from his mother’s memorial services for what [...]

The Economic PATRIOT Act

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Economics, Politics

Reason’s Jacob Sullum notes the similarities between the stimulus bill and one of the more notorious pieces of “emergency” legislation of the Bush Administration:
I flashed back to the fall of 2001 upon reading the subhead over a New York Times story about Monday’s presidential press conference: “He Says That Failing to Act Could Lead to [...]

Question Of The Day

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Random Thoughts, Religion

From Heather MacDonald at Secular Right:
Will Bill O’Reilly or anyone else who saw the hand of God in the safe landing of US Airways Flight 1549 this January please explain why God chose not to save Continental Connection Flight 3407, which plunged into a house outside of Buffalo last night, killing all 49 people on [...]

House Democrats Pass Stimulus Bill That Nobody Read

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Economics, Politics

Less than 48 hours after making the nearly 1,100 page House-Senate compromise bill available for review, the House approved that bill today with no Republican support:
WASHINGTON — The House approved a $787 billion economic stimulus package Friday afternoon, with Democrats successfully promoting it as a boost for middle-class Americans and Republicans countering in vain that [...]

Mark Sanford: Don’t Mortgage The Future

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Economics, Mark Sanford, Politics

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has a commentary piece up at CNN that is worth reading:
The president’s stimulus represents the largest and most invasive economic action in our government’s history. For a relatively small number of short-term jobs, this administration and this Congress are poised to mortgage the economic future of my four boys and [...]

They Have Absolutely No Idea What They’re Doing

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Economics, Politics

Anyone who thinks that Congress actually knows what they’re talking about, well, you’re kidding yourselves.
Consider this:
“Regardless of party, we all cast our votes with one hand and crossed our fingers with the other.”
That’s Congressman Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri.
Also, House Majority Whip Steny Hoyer is apparently advising appeal to the Almighty:
Hoyer advising prayer that bill works. [...]

Economists: The Stimulus Won’t Work

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Barack Obama, Economics, Politics

A large number of economists are saying that the stimulus package being voted on by Congress won’t do much to stimulate the economy:
WASHINGTON — The compromise economic stimulus plan agreed to by negotiators from the House of Representatives and the Senate is short on incentives to get consumers spending again and long on social goals [...]

The Horror At 1:30pm

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Economics, Politics

Despite the fact that it’s pretty obvious that no Congressman or Senator will have read the 1,000+ page monstrosity that is the stimulus bill, it seems fairly clear that the bill will pass the House fairly easily when it comes up for a vote at 1:30pm.

After that it’s on to the Senate where Ted Kennedy [...]

by @ Friday, February 13th, 2009. Filed under Economics, Politics

Michelle Muccio of the Acton Institute has a really good idea:

It’s a whole lot better than a measly $ 13 a week.
