Much of the Washington area woke up this morning to a blanket of snow:
A significant winter storm blanketed the Washington area in white overnight, dumping nearly a foot of snow in parts of southern Maryland and between two and four inches inside the Capital Beltway. Suburban school systems closed, the federal government allowed workers to take liberal leave and snow plows struggled to clear main roadways in time for the morning commute.
In the District, many universities and private schools shut down for the day, and officials said public schools would open two hours late. Metrorail opened as usual at 5 a.m. and was not experiencing delays, officials said, but Metrobuses were avoiding side streets in some areas. Commuter rail was also affected.
Forecasters said snow would fall steadily through mid-morning before tapering off, with an additional one to two inches of accumulation expected, making it potentially the largest winter storm in three years. The strong winds sent flakes dancing through the air, and temperatures hovered in the low 20s, allowing the snow to stick. Temperatures will remain below freezing all day, forecasters said, and the wind might push the wind chill to single digits tonight.
Happy March everyone !
And, yes, the picture above is the view from our front door. I shoveled the porch and sidewalk at 6am and you’d never know it.
