New Poll: Obama Would Crush Palin

by @ 2:57 pm on March 18, 2009. Filed under 2012 Election, Barack Obama, Politics, Sarah Palin

Yes, it’s early to be talking about 2012 matchups, but this can’t be good news for Sarah-boosters:

A new Public Policy Polling survey shows President Obama would crush Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in a hypothetical 2012 presidential contest, 55% to 35%.

(…)

“The key reason Palin would lose to Obama by so much is that even though she might be the top choice for a certain segment of voters within her party, there’s also a number of Republicans who say they would vote for Obama if their party nominated Palin.”

More: “Palin is viewed negatively by 50% of voters in the country with just 39% holding a positive opinion of her. 69% of Republicans have a favorable view of her, while only 11% of Democrats do.”

Ouch.

The poll also shows Palin trailing Obama by 39 points among women (65% for Obama vs. 26% for men), by 4% among Independents (with 12% undecided), by 12 points among those aged 18-29, by 29 points among 30-45, by 26 points among those aged 45-65, and by 28 points among those 65 and above.

I don’t care how far out the election is, you don’t come back from numbers like these.

Well, realistically anyway. I can imagine a few scenarios where Palin surmounts the insurmountable, but they usually end with Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin bursting into the room exclaiming “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!!!”

  2. I have never gotten the conservative infatuation with Palin. I suspect if she was 20 pounds heavier she’d be dismissed as what she is: a glib lightweight.

If I was on the conservative team I’d be looking at Gov. Huntsman of Utah. He’s smart, serious, capable and has 30% more actual human parts than his fellow Mormon governor, Romney. But that would be if conservatives actually want to win rather than just pout. I’m not convinced they do.

  3. Michael,

It might not come in 2012 for many reasons, but when the Republican resurgance does come it will be the Governors, people like Huntman, Mark Sanford, and, yes, Bobby Jindal too, who will do it.

  4. I do think Jindal could get a chance. He walked into a plate glass window. We’ll see if he bounces back. At least he’s a genuinely smart guy.

  5. I keep reminding people who say that Jindal killed his Presidential hopes with that speech that there was another young Governor from a Southern state who gave a nationally televised speech and completely bombed.

His name was Bill Clinton. He gave the keynote address at the 1988 Democratic Convention and was widely panned, mostly because he talked way too long. Four years later, he became President of the United States.

I’m not necessarily a fan of Jindal’s policies, but to write him off because of one speech is just silly IMO. He’s a young guy, just 37, and he’s got many years ahead of him.

pfff i bet you would get the SAME numbers with any republican.

    palin 2012

  7. Considering that there are very few Republicans contenders with Palin’s name recognition, you may well be right.

The difference is that once people get to know someone like Mark Sanford or John Huntsman, they will realize what a complete airhead Sarah Palin is in comparison

  8. steptoe says:

Sarah has WAY more charisma then all the other GOP goons. To underestimate palin is a fatal mistake. when she is unfiltered her numbers with the independents go sky high.

you can’t run boring white guys like Mark Sanford or John Huntsman against obama you need a conservative candidate with energy and charisma, and sarah has it.

Her numbers can only go up from here. the media can only suppress her likability for so long.

  10. Nice attempt to deny reality there.

I’m with you Tizzy. CBS in an earlier post and now the PPP’s pee pee.

I believe the false messiah is ahead of any potential contender NOW. His approval numbers though shrinking are still high. If Sarah gets the nomination, this event will be so incredible that the whole nation will go nuts for her. More than the first “black” male nominated. I see Sarah picking a Latino or Jeb Bush for VP. This will bring her Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Indiana and all the Bush states, and maybe all the Reagan states. Even if Obama does a not so bad job, he will need all the help of ACRON and the Black panthers he can to beat the first woman nominated for US president!
