2009 Baseball Predictions

by @ 9:58 am on April 5, 2009.

I tried this last year and didn’t do very well, but, you know, I figured I’d try it again anyway.

So, here are my predictions for how this year’s baseball season will turn out.

American League East

  1. New York Yankees
  2. Tampa Bay Devil Rays
  3. Boston Red Sox
  4. Baltimore Orioles
  5. Toronto Blue Jays

The Yankees paid a lot of money during the off-season to avoid a repeat of last season and, assuming everyone stays healthy, I think it will pay off. The Devil Rays, meanwhile, will continue to surprise everyone and are likely to continue being a thorn in the Red Sox’s side, although the final standings between Boston and Tampa Bay are likely to be a difference of no more than a game or two.

American League Central

  1. Chicago White Sox
  2. Minnesota Twins
  3. Cleveland Indians
  4. Detroit Tigers
  5. Kansas City Royals

Not much to say here. I thought last year would be Cleveland’s year, but it didn’t work out that way at all and there’s no sign they’ll be able to surge past the twin powerhouses in Chicago and Minnesota.

American League West

  1. Los Angeles Angels
  2. Oakland Athletics
  3. Seattle Mariners
  4. Texas Rangers

Just as lop-sided as last year.

American League Wild-Card: Tampa Bay Devil Rays

American League Championship Series: Yankees vs Devil Rays

American League Champion: Yankees

Now, onto the National League:

National League East:

  1. Philadelphia Phillies
  2. New York Mets
  3. Atlanta Braves
  4. Florida Marlins
  5. Washington Nationals

Once again, the NL East will be dominated by the Phillies and Mets right up until the end, but I think the World Series Champs will pull it out.

National League Central

  1. Chicago Cubs
  2. St. Louis Cardinals
  3. Milwaukee Brewers
  4. Cincinnati Reds
  5. Houston Astros
  6. Pittsburgh Pirates

We saw the Brewers surge briefly last year, which is why I think they’ll get to at least third place this time around, but the Cards and the Cubs are going to be battling this one out when September comes. Go Cubbies !

National League West

  1. Los Angeles Dodgers
  2. Colorado Rockies
  3. Arizona Diamondbacks
  4. San Francisco Giants
  5. San Diego Padres

Joe Torre took the Dodgers into the playoffs last year, and I think he’ll do it this year too.

National League Wild Card:  Mets

National League Championship Series: Phillies v. Mets

National League Champion: Phillies

World Series: Yankees v.  Phillies

World Series Champion: Yankees in 6

Got your predicts including the Pirates last in the NLC, unless they have already quit the league. I can not comment on your picks because I see so many of them but they will be entered into my annual Baseball Predictions game, now in it’s 50th season. If you are interested in seeing how you do against over 200 other predictors, check out the website. We should be up and running in mid-May. You can contact me from there.
